MANNY RIOS

How old were you when you first started playing, who taught you to play and who most influenced your development as a young player?
I started playing soccer when I was about four years old. My dad started me really and also my uncle Jorge Salmeron. My cousin, Joel Salmeron, and me have played together ever since.

What's been the single best moment of your soccer career thus far, at any level of competition?
A lot of players that are at a high level right now have played in Hispano League when they were younger. I am proud to say that I won Top Scorer for seven seasons in a row.

What are your long-term goals in the sport?
My long-term goals are to play academy for the rest of this season and next season, as well and then hopefully I'll move up to the U-18's. I want to make a good college team and hopefully get drafted into the MLS.

What has been the most valuable aspect of being trained by the Academy coaches?
Learning everything I have at practices. Being at a higher level shows you what you're missing and what you need to be better.

What has training with the Academy taught you about yourself as a player and where do you need improvement?
It has taught me to be confident and to play my game. I probably need improvement in speed and communication.

What is the most difficult part of training with the Academy?
You always have to perform at your best. There is always a coach watching and some times people get nervous because they try not to mess up so much. We are fighting for a spot on the roster so you have to always be good.

Does the training differ from past training you've had, and in what way?
Yes, it is more organized and also more important and serious.

Which of your Academy teammates impresses you the most and why?
Probably Victor Pineda because he is very skillful. He's better than most but he isn't cocky about it since he's very quiet and doesn't brag, even though he is probably one of the best on the team.

Which of the other U-16 or U-18 Academy players impresses you and why?
The player that stands out to me is Bryan Ciesiulka because even though he is not one of the tallest on the team he is very smart and has good foot skills, as well.
