LUIS MEDINA

How old were you when you first started playing, who taught you to play and who most influenced your development as a young player?
I was five years old when I first started playing the game and my dad taught me how to play. His friends always tell me that he was a good soccer player but I don't remember seeing him play. I think the person who influences me the most is my dad, Luis Medina.

What's been the single best moment of your soccer career thus far, at any level of competition?
The single best moment in my soccer career was when we went to New York with the Academy and played Empire. I think there was two minutes left in the game and I half-vollied the ball into the net and got the winning goal for us.

What are your long-term goals in the sport?
My long-term goal is to become a pro. I want to try to become the number one player in the world and try to retire when I get really old and can't run any more.

What has been the most valuable aspect of being trained by the Academy coaches?
That they are very committed to soccer and they want to get everything right before the end of practice.

What has training with the Academy taught you about yourself as a player and where do you need improvement?
That I can't always check to the ball without looking over my shoulders because I might have a defender on me. I can improve this by looking over my shoulder before I call for the ball and be ahead of the game.

What is the most difficult part of training with the Academy?
I think the most difficult part of our training is when we do the insanity workout because I try my best and it does get you tired.

Does the training differ from past training you've had, and in what way?
Yes, a little bit because every year with the Academy the training gets more and more intense.

Which of your Academy teammates impresses you the most and why?
I think Gio is the player who impresses me the most. His work ethic is great and he tries his best every time he steps on the field. He never puts anyone down and he is always giving positive comments and I think he will start in a real game some time soon.

Which of the other U-16 or U-18 Academy players impresses you and why?
I think that B and Harry are the players that impress me the most because they are always tuned into the game. They play simple, share the ball and take their opportunities when they can.
