Urban gets hat trick as Warriors defeat Montini

By Curt Herron

After seeing Tim Daniels go down with a season-ending injury in this year's opener, Wheaton Academy coach Jeff Brooke began looking for others to fill the scoring void.

While that search continues, the Warrior coach is hoping that a few players are ready to step up their games in order to take on an important role as scoring threats.

As WA kicked off a stretch of five Suburban Christian Conference matches over the next two weeks on Monday, Brooke received the type of performance he's been seeking.

It was turned in by junior Josh Urban, who had a breakthrough showing by scoring three goals and adding an assist for the Warriors in their match with Montini Catholic.

The Warriors were all over the Broncos, scoring three times in the opening 10 minutes of play and then they extended their advantage to 5-0 at the halftime break.

After adding three more scores during the final 40 minutes, the Warriors wound up claiming an 8-2 victory over the Broncos in a match played at the Academy field.

Andrew Leutkehans gave WA (6-3-1, 3-0) the lead for good just 104 seconds into the match and then Stephen Fernandes was denied on two shot tries a short time later.

Urban's first score came with 6:10 gone when the junior put in a shot from close range after Montini's keeper came out of the net to try to make a stop on the play.

Then with 30:00 remaining in the opening half, Urban stole a ball from a Bronco defender and connected on a short attempt to give the hosts a quick 3-0 advantage.

Shortly after that, Warrior keeper Jesse Carmody faced his only serious threat of a 50-minute stint when he stopped a free kick sent from just outside of the box.

Following a brief lull in the action, the hosts grabbed a 4-0 lead with 20:55 left in the half when Frank Della Torre connected, following a pass from Fernandes.

The hosts kept up the pressure as Della Torre had an attempt that was deflected away for a corner kick and Brian McLean later sent in a line drive that was halted.

Urban also had a hand in his squad's fifth goal when he sent a cross to Trevor Adams, who headed a ball in for a score with 10:17 remaining in the opening half.

It was more of the same for the Warriors immediately after the break as Mark Rougas had a line drive punched away and then Devin Moore was denied on a free kick.

The Warriors scored again with 10:18 gone in the half when Moore sent in a liner and Urban was stopped on a rebound try before putting in a subsequent loose ball.

Shortly after Spencer Graf took over for Carmody to see his first action in goal, the Broncos connected for their first score with 29:20 remaining in the match.

WA kept threatening as McLean was stopped on a long attempt, Brian Cairncross saw a short try deflected and Moore was denied on the follow-up to his free kick.

Montini connected again to pull to within 6-2 with 18:19 remaining and then it followed with a pair of free kicks that the new Warrior keeper was able to halt.

The Warriors responded with a corner from Urban that was lined to the keeper and then Moore put in a short attempt to give his team a 7-2 lead with 13:44 to go.

There was more drama for the hosts during the next few minutes as Gareth Flynn was stopped on a grounder and then Moore's corner kick was lined to the keeper.

Colton Seager nearly scored on a header with 2:40 left, but the ball hit the post and stopped. But Seager was able to connect on a short attempt with 1:04 left.

WA returns to SCC action today when it hosts St. Edward and on on Thursday, the Warriors travel to Marian Central Catholic for one of their bigger league tests.

Next week, the Warriors play at Guerin Prep and host Chicago Christian in their efforts to move to 7-0 prior to their October 6 home match with Marmion Academy.
